Our Games

Here are a few of our games that we like to teach at MulaMath:

Addition Old Maid:

Set-up
  1. Start with a deck of cards in which each card has a number 1-10 labelled on the front and back.
  2. Pick a magic number 11-20 (the middle numbers work the best) for the game
  3. Deal out seven cards to every player
How the game is played:
  • One person will fan out their cards to the person on their left. The person on the left will then pick a card from the fanned out cards and if they can add this card to another card to create the magic number, they can set both cards down (i.e. if the magic number if 12 and person A picks a 5, if he has a seven he can set both cards down.
  • If the card cannot be added to another card in his hand to make the number, the player must keep the card, and fan out his cards for the next player.
  • The game ends when either one person has lost all of his or her cards or when the deck is empty. If the deck is empty, the person with the least amount of cards wins. If there are two players with the same amount, the player whose cards add up to a higher number than the other player's cards wins. If the cards add up to the same value, the first person to call the value that their cards add up to will win.

Addition and Subtraction Game:

Set-up
  1. Start with a deck of cards in which each card has a number 1-10 labelled on the front and back.
  2. Pick a magic number 11-20 (the middle numbers work the best) for the game
  3. Deal out five cards to every player
How the game is played:
  • Each player will try to add and subtract the values on the other four cards that they have to try to get the value of the fifth card (i.e. 5 + 4 - 2 + 1 = 8)
  • Someone can trade in their card for two cards from the deck if they cannot figure out a way to get a value.
  • The first person to find a way to add and subtract their cards to get the value of one of their cards will get a point for that round.
  • Play 10 rounds and the person with the most points will be the winner.
  • If there are two people with the same amount of points at the end of 10 points , there will be a tiebreaker 11th round.

War!!!:

Set-up
  1. Simply split the deck in half and give each player one of the halves.
How the game is played:
  • Without looking at your cards or rearranging them, each player will flip the top three cards of their deck and add up the numbers. Whichever player has the highest sum wins that hand and the game is played until someone has less than three cards.
  • If it is a tie, flip the next three cards and whichever player has the highest total value wins all of the cards!
  • For more advanced players, multiply the numbers instead of adding.

Guess the number!:

Set-up
  1. Player one has the deck of cards and player two sits across and has no cards.
How the game is played:
  • Player one will draw a card and give math clues so that the other player can guess the number (ex: 5-4, player 2 guesses "1"). See how many you can get in 1 minute!

Matching:

Set-up
  1. Lay all of the cards face down in rows.
  2. Pick a number between 11 and 20
How the game is played:
  • Each player takes turn flipping over two cards. If the cards add up to the number picked them the player gets to keep both of the cards.
  • The game is continued when there are no combinations that will add up to the magic number.
